African american culure question? hair braiding?

Hair braiding in Africa has a multi-leveled function within each culture apart from the beauty and sophistication of the designs. What are some of the ways in which social and cultural meaning are expressed through braiding designs? Does the use of hair braiding designs by people of African heritage in the Americas also indicate a measure of cultural awareness and possible connection between the two cultural worlds?African american culure question? hair braiding?
Braiding is a social/cultural tradition Grandmother did mom's hair who did her sister's hair who did we children. All the while swapping the news and gossip of the day. Many of our social life could me traced to the hairdressers and to the church and to Grandmother's kitchen.African american culure question? hair braiding?
I definately feel it is a skill passed down. It comes almost natural for most. I notice that African women seem to braid a lot faster though.
For me wearing locs has both cultural, spiritual and personal connections.

  • Is hair braiding dangerous?

i braid my hair every day, after i get home from school to keep it from getting frizzy, and irritating my face and ears, is braiding it every day dangerous? Is hair braiding dangerous?
    NoIs hair braiding dangerous?
    never.lol
If you braid it tightly (especially in a ton of small braids as in cornrows), it's a strain on your hair and your hair will start either getting thinner in places and/or breaking. If you MUST braid it tightly, then don't do it every day. Loosely braided shouldn't really be a problem at all. Now, ponytails, on the other hand....

    Lori
You should try leaving the braids in for a while. About every few weeks. Every time you take them out, or put them back in, it breaks the strands, leaving you with split ends. So watch it. Other than that, it's perfectly fine. Remember to condition your scalp.
    No, not at all!

If you want to make sure your hair doesn't get frizzy, apply some leave-in conditioner on your hair before you braid it.
    of course not!

braiding hair helps your hair so much

    it prevents knots forming

    and helps hair grow better.
No, of course not! I love to braid my hair after showering because then it gets all wavy!

    - Elizabeth -
If you braid it too tightly (so your hair is pulling at the scalp) it puts stress on the hair follicle. If you do that to your hair every day all day for years, you can start to experience thinning hair or hair loss. Just braiding your hair after school for a few hours is fine tho, youre not going to lose your hair from that.
Yes and no. Braiding your hair every day to keep it from frizzing and irritating your face and ears could be 'breaking it off' and it will get 'thinner' over time. Try getting some nice 'headbands' and some bobby pins and barettes, and that way you can 'do your hair differently' every day, and can even wear it 'back' at school and look good. And NEVER 'braid your hair' to sleep ... that will cause even worse breakage. Get a 'snood' (a crocheted net) to hold it when you sleep, so your hair can 'breathe better' and you won't have to spend too much time combing/brushing out your snarls.
no its not. wash and condition your health helps keep it healthy and strong
nope, it's not.....it may make your scalp sore, but that's it.
    nope
It's not dangerous, but if your face is getting iritatted, then mabye you should stop for one day, then if your face still keeps getting irriated, then it's not because of the braids, it's because of something else. But if the irritation stops, then you should stop braiding your hair. Some people are just very snesitive to things like that.
Only if you get your fingers all twisted in them when doing it.

Otherwise, no. You could consider braiding your hair as gently exercising it and your scalp.
no as long as you don't braid them too tight its actually very healthy
no just make sure ur scalp is moist and not dry, or else ur hair could start breaking off

Stuff to make braiding hair easier?

I have shoulder lenth hair. and I'm going to try different braids for the summer. but my hair is kinda crawly. any ideas an how to make it stifferStuff to make braiding hair easier?
Try Bed Head products.Stuff to make braiding hair easier?
The best time to do it is when its wet. . So, do it when you get out of the shower, or get a spray bottle and wet your hair first. .
If my crawly you mean curly, Then just braid it when its wet. Put a little moose on it too if you want. This will help control frizz.

Does braiding your hair and washing it helps it grow?

Depends on which type of braiding method you use. Anytime you do a style for a long time(such as cornrows or box braids), you up the chances of making your hair healthier by not processing it with heat and harsh chemicals.

If you mean braiding it for a longer time by getting micro braids or extensions yes you will see a major change as it grows. Typically these type of braids can be kept it in for 2 and half to 3 months at the most and since the hair is not exposure to straightening, heat damage or anything else the hair can become fuller and thicker making to grow easier! And of course washing your hair with a good shampoo and using a deep conditioner always will help hair maintain its' health!

For beauty reviews for all women of color visit www.palacinka.com where you can find more information. Good luck!!Does braiding your hair and washing it helps it grow?
No, it does not. A person's hair grows more (naturally) in the spring and summertime than in fall and winter time.Does braiding your hair and washing it helps it grow?
for me i think that braiding your hair it does make i grow, but it also breaks the hair too. you could get braids done atleast once a month and not too tight. try using the products that contain olive oil.
    hmm. i doubt it.

If i keep my hair braided until december how long will it be ?

Im thinkin about doing this to retain length. If i keep my hair braided until december how long will it be ?
everyone hair grows differently so I can't say for sure but make sure you keep it clean and condition it regularlyIf i keep my hair braided until december how long will it be ?
While braiding can prevent some breakage (and stretch strands slightly), it doesn't promote growth. Your hair will grow at the same rate whether braided or not. For most people, hair grows approximately 1/2 inch per month -- for those with tight curls or a textured growth pattern, it will appear to grow less than that.
everyone's hair growth speed is different, so only time will tell.
How much does your hair grow? Braids don't make hair grow faster.

Is it very damaging for a caucasion woman to put her hair in braids (i.e. in jamaica on vaccation?) I have very healthy hair and heard that this can causes damage sometimes severe. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.A question about braiding hair?
If you do not keep it in to long, then it wont have as much of a chance of damaging your hair. take a short cold or hot shower every few nights to make sure that you hair is somewhat moisturized. then, sometimes if i have cornrows in, i put a teeny dab of moisturizing cream + sunblock on my scalp in between the rows.A question about braiding hair?
i think the only thing that would damage them per say would be too keep them in forever

i knew i girl who has gorgeously long hair and had dreads. she some how took them out and she looks fine.
Not bad as long as you do not keep them in too long ! You should be fine !

How to get volume in hair after braiding it.?

so i really want to have that voluminous wavy or crimped style hair. i have my hair braided but usually have i take them out my hair is still flat or has a little bit of volume. i want lots of volume in my hair but i really dont want to tease it since it might ruin the waves. so how can i get my hair to have lots of volume without teasing it? please help me.How to get volume in hair after braiding it.?
If you want it volumized but still want it to look curly there is a way to do that by teasing it. just take the very bottom layer of your hair near the roots and tease that. Then put the rest of your hair over it and your hair will still look curly but also volumized. Just make sure you hairspray it. Hope this helps. How to get volume in hair after braiding it.?
I'm doing that right now! but it usually looks better after you've left the braids in after two days.

Can you get a hair weave without getting your hair braided?

I have had a hair weave once, I really liked it a lot, except the braiding my hair part. I have a sensitive scalp when it comes to pulling on my hair. It hurt really bad (to me) and the pain lasted a few days. I want a hair weave again, but do not want to get it braided.

Someone told me you can just tie it tightly under a cap, but Idk how well that would work.

Thanks :)Can you get a hair weave without getting your hair braided?
There's plenty of weaving methods that don't require braiding. There's the clip-on kinds. With these you have to make sure you're hair texture and color perfectly matches them. They're quick, easy, and you can take them out whenever you want to. I think this is one of the fastest and flattest weaves. I like making my own clip ons instead of blowing $100 or more on already made ones.

There's strand by strand fusions that should be done by a professional. I've done my own myself, but it would've looked better if I had a pro do them. The weave is individually glued to each strand of your real hair by either keratin or polywax. I don't encourage anyone to use Polywax because it will rip your hair out and do some major damage.

There's the micro linking method which can be done with individual hairs or can be done with weave tracks.

There's a brand called EZ Weft that is done without braids.

try the style with three-strand braid, braid can hang on to the back of the head or melinkar around you, for that you need to be smart in making braid three pieces.

Other variations of the braid berlintas or complicated, such as weaving cloth. or by using aksesories can braid the hair on you, in the middle of the middle or some of each braid or braid hair in the end, all in accordance with the taste of you. hopefully useful ...

What would be the price-or charge at the beauty salon to have your hair braided into corn rows?

I have long hair .Does this matter? When should you take them out? What would be the price-or charge at the beauty salon to have your hair braided into corn rows?
If it's your own hair about $25-$30 bucks, but if you add hair add about $20 to the price. I was charge $35 for straight to the back cornrows here in Detroit (cheap price) including hair but the braider did it at home Shop visits cost more of course. Wear Cornrows (well treated) for about 2-3 weeks, wash and deep condition afterwards. What would be the price-or charge at the beauty salon to have your hair braided into corn rows?
depend on the salon places where i asked about ranged from 20-40 dollars also depends on how far back and how many. my friends sister did it for me and charged me 5 bucks so i saved about 35 dollars! lol
Depending on where you go, probably about 40 bucks. The length of your hair shouldn't matter. They usually charge you based on your age. If your a child, you would be charged the child rate. If not, then they usually have a set adult rate for corn rows.

I would recommend taking the corn rows down after about a week or two. You hair would need a good washing by then anyways. Plus the cornrows would be ratty looking by then.

    Hope that helps!

When someone gets they're hair braided with synthetic hair how do they make it all curly?

Do they use rollers because I know that you can't use a curling iron, or can you? When someone gets they're hair braided with synthetic hair how do they make it all curly?
use rollers and dip it in boiling hot water and be very careful. put the water in a big bowl and dip the rolled hair in it. for like 30 sec or so.When someone gets they're hair braided with synthetic hair how do they make it all curly?
Yes, just like Ms. QT Pie said - use rollers and dip the hair in boiling hot water. Or if you want your hair to crimp, put it in a number of braids and dip that in the boiling hot water. Good luck!!
All of the other answers are wrong You have to buy synthetic hair that is already curled..Do not roll it do not heat (melt)it only natural hair can be reformed into curl

If you boil the hair you will MELT IT!
No...you use foam rollers, but DON'T use the foam, and dip it in boiled hot water. It works!!!
You'd have to get a roller set.

A curling iron will melt synthetic hair.

Go to your local African American hair salon. Other then that, go to a school based hair salon. Do yall have GillTech hair school down there? Go to any of those suggested places and ask for a scalp treatment. They will supply your head with a hot oil treatment and I don't know exactly what it's called, but they add some sort of cream to your hair so that it grows better and quicker. The stars use that cream stuff--it's why their hair is long and our's isn't. They rather us not knowing about so that their hair can remain longer so we can idolize our wigs to be like theirs.

Can somone help?I'm want to get my hair braided in individual braids and i keep hearing that 8oz?
I suggest you go 2 a hair store and buy packs of hair. Buying hair off the internet sounds expensive and I'm pretty sure u can buy the same quality hair from a beauty store. When I get my hair braided I usually use 5 and a half packs. But I make sure 2 bring 7 packs jus in case. As far as oz. go, I never looked @ how much the package weighs. I jus buy the package that has the color and length that I want.I'm want to get my hair braided in individual braids and i keep hearing that 8oz?
I've not had my hair braided but I do know expenses and smart shopping. LOL If it's with anything you'd buy in bulk, see if someone else may want to share in the cost with you that may only need the excess. Also check with your style shop. They may purchase the excess for those who may not have enough. With health code rules..I'm not sure.

Bottom line...It's always better to have and not need than to need and not have...Good luck!

Does BRAIDING hair very often makes hair grow faster ???

noDoes BRAIDING hair very often makes hair grow faster ???
No, not that I know of.Does BRAIDING hair very often makes hair grow faster ???
No. and if you have somewhat straight hair, when you unravel all those braids, you notice you have alot more hair in your hands than normal. It puts stress on the hair, also depends on how tight it was braided.
obviously not.....it just leaves kinks in ur hair!! except that it doesnt do much....
As everyone else said the answer to that is NO. the hair grows about 1/2 inch per month on the average... in the summer perhaps a bit more than in the winter or cooler months. for good hair growth I recommend staying out of stressful situations, and B complex vitamins... a good scalp massage every time you shampoo to invigorate the scalp blood circulation. other than that enjoy your hair it costs very little compared to diamonds
no, your hair will grow at pretty much the same rate no matter what you do to it
Yes it does!Don't let them fool you, it does! But it make your hair itch!

Chongo is a kind of bun that you make with your hair..... when you put it all up and it looks like a ball of hair, or a roll...... hope you get what I mean.

Here's an image for you to have an idea of what it looks like, although there are many different styles:

It seems to be a Native American word.
    it means Pony tail
According to the Spanish Royal Academy Dictionary

in Guatemala is a hair lock

in Honduras %26amp; Mexico a chignon (twist or roll of hair) or pony tail

in P. Rico, it's just bad quality hair !!

In Spain it's not used at all.

    Hope this helps.
    yeah its a ponytail!
this is what i think it means....

  • In which direction do you get your hair braided inorder to sew in weave?

I am african american and I want extensions sewed in but I don't know which way to get my hair braided. Straight back or what???In which direction do you get your hair braided inorder to sew in weave?
well i am white but when i get extensions sewn in they section off my hair and make 3 cornrows equal distance apart acrss the back of my head horizontally then sew the tracks to the braid

Does it matter whether i get my hair braided with weaeve or not?

well my hair is a good length almost to the middle of my back. Im about to get it braided with weave in micros tomorrow. But everybody keeps bothering me telling me i dont need to but i want to.Does it matter whether i get my hair braided with weaeve or not?
The weave will protect your hair from day-to-day elements. You know, heat, sun, weather etc.. and make the braids last longer.

If your hair is that long you can plan on sitting there for quite a while, especially if you want micro braids. If you are leaving some of the hair loose (not braided to the end) make sure you are washing and conditioning your hair often to keep your natural hair from drying and and splitting. Also, braiders sometimes clip the hair that is sticking out of the braids to clean it up at the end. If you have freshly had your ends clipped you want to be careful on just how much she wants to ';clean up'; (she could be clipping quite a lot). You probably want it braided because you like the style and want the manageability, so go for it.Does it matter whether i get my hair braided with weaeve or not?
why would ou want to put weave in if u already got long hair? it makes no sense unless you're gonna get something which looks completely different from your natural hair, or u jus want to braid in order to give ur natural hair a break from processing, chemicals etc.
I am confident that u DO NOT need to get ur hair braised with weave Why would u and ur hair is long enough already? Ur hair would look natural if u just braided ur real hair. But if u want to go ahead because u want to..

How do i stop from breaking out around my hairline after getting my hair braided?

I just got my hair braided on the 3rd. My braids dont feel that tight anymore but i am breaking out around my hairline. In the front is fine but i cant see it in the back. I use a braid spray that has tea tree oil and it brings the pimple to a head and it hurts. What can i do to help from breaking out? or what can i do to pop the pimples i cant see?....(gross i know)How do i stop from breaking out around my hairline after getting my hair braided?
Wow - what a terrible braid job! There isn't anything you can do because the person who braided your hair, braided WAY TOO tight! I never braid that tight for that simple reason. Unfortunately, the only thing that you can do is to go back to the braider and tell her to loosen them up (which she should do for free). The braids around your hairline may come out and you don't want this to happen, so call the braider ASAP! By the way, don't pop those things, it can cause a sore and that's way grosser than just getting your braids loosened. How do i stop from breaking out around my hairline after getting my hair braided?
try not to use that stuff anymore... use like hair wax thats what i used on my braids have someone do it in the back for you ...

Where can i find a hair salon that sells hair extensions/weave or does braiding/weaving in toledo, oh?

im going to school in toledo, and i haven't found any luck finding an african-american hair salon or hair store. if its in bowling green thats fine :)Where can i find a hair salon that sells hair extensions/weave or does braiding/weaving in toledo, oh?
I had been planning to get a weave/braid-in as well, but a friend turned me on to clip on extensions instead, you can get real human hair to match your exact color and texture, they are much easier to put in, as long as you invest in quality you wont need to worry about needing to get it replaces, or the weave showing, having a weave put in is very expensive and after a certain amount of time you'll need it replaced, what if you don't like it? Clip ins are easy to apply and you can find them at any sally salon, or online, and there's no commitment neccessary.

  • I Just Got My Hair Braided, How Can I Ensure My Hair Grows?

I got kinky twist today, and am probably keeping them in for about 6 weeks. Because of that I can't really wash my hair or anything that often, so how can I ensure my hair grows, without having to wash my hair?I Just Got My Hair Braided, How Can I Ensure My Hair Grows?
My hair always grows a lot when it's in braids. I actually wash my hair more often in braids than out, specifically if I have synthetic hair, because it bugs me quite a bit. Depending on size, you could wash your hair once a week, as normal. Just braid your twists together, and focus on washing and gently massaging the scalp, then rinse your hair thoroughly. Last time I had braids, I washed my hair three times a week. It doesn't really matter though. Make sure you oil your scalp at least a couple nights a week, and spray a braid moisturizer or something of that sort on your braids. Your hair will grow on it's own.... the beauty of having braids in is that they are very low maintenance. When you take them out (if you do this yourself) Make sure you cut your hair at the lowest possible spot (if you need to cut anything) This will ensure that you don't cut off much of your natural hair (if you got extensions) After you take out your braids, don't put any chemicals in it for at least one week, two if you can. Your hair is still fragile, and while you could get a relaxer with no issue, you don't want to risk lots of breakage. After you take out your braids, deep condition your hair really well, oil your scalp, moisturize well, etc. Your hair always grows in braids, but breakae may prevent you from seeing that growth. Ask your hair stylist about ';new growth'; in your hair if she doesn't tell you already. Your stylist should be able to tell how much new hair you've grown just by feeling your roots. That might give you some encouragement.I Just Got My Hair Braided, How Can I Ensure My Hair Grows?
hair growth has nothing to do with braids, and will grow on it's own, no matter what. but with you not having to style it, that will automatically keep breakage down.

How to Make straight human hair braids wavy or curly?

I just got african hair braids with the straight human hair. Now I wish I would have gotten wet and wavy because the effect is boring and blah. Is there a way to make the hair appear to be wet and wavy? How to Make straight human hair braids wavy or curly?
Yep, Because you do have braids with human hair just simply use the curling iron or rollers. You would curl your hair like you would without braids, don't burn yourself. And you can even braid your hair so that it can have that wavy look to it. I wear braids like nobody's business. How to Make straight human hair braids wavy or curly?

  • Is 13 months too young to get your hair braided?

My friend's sister wants to braid her 13-month old daughter's hair, %26amp; she wanted me to ask on here to make sure it's OK. I've seen 11-month old babies with their hair braided to the scalp, but I think I remember they started to go bald on the sides. Is 13 months too young to get your hair braided?
My son is 8 months old and gets his hair cornrowed all the time. He doesn't scream or cry, and I don't pull it too tight, but it looks nice and neat. I think if the child will sit still and not put up too much of a fight then it's ok. Micro-braids I think should wait a few years, well really, any braids where fake hair has to be added. But just little box braids or cornrows, I don't see the big issue. Is 13 months too young to get your hair braided?
Braiding is hard on the hair. Baby hair is very soft I wouldn't start braiding until she was much older.
No, it's not too young. But whoever braids it should not be pulling the hair tight and all of that. That's really not good. small soft braids. They are just a baby, you don't need to have every piece of hair and all of that like some people do.
A regular braid should be fine but those tiny braids really hurt on a little kid and be too pulling so she should start the braided part about an inch away from the scalp so it doesnt pull hair out
Please don't do this to her! I work in a daycare and 2 of our babies have had this done. Both mom's said the babies screamed for 4 hours straight. This seems like old fashioned torture to me and should be considered some sort of abuse! Now if you can do it without her screaming and crying then I guess go for it..but don't make her sit through hours for torture please!
she should just do simple brands nothing like micros or cornrows.
No I think that is fine as long as its not to tight.
soooooo, if people on here say it's ok....then it's really ok???? wow!
as long as you don't braid it too tight, they shouldn't go bald. I think it would be cute.
i would wait!!!!! think about it there skin is so soft and new if we were to get our hair braided it wouldnt hurt cuz weve been thro hell and back with our hair she hasnt so tell her to just wait till there used to the tightness on there scalp

ive had my hair twisted to the scalp..my first time it hurt really bad!!! imagine how it would feel for her

Do you know how to make a french braid? If so, it's basically like a small french braid made from her bangs. You make a side parting, and instead of doing the braid so it goes down your back like a normal french braid you start braiding to the side. Don't take too much hair, only the width of 3 fingers. If you have thick bangs, use the bangs for the braid. Braid, all the while adding more hair into the braid, until you get to the area slightly above your ear. Then spritz some hairspray, use a bobby pin to pin it to your head. Toussle the rest of the hair that is down and make sure some hair covers the part where the bobby pin tucks the braid in.

Goodluck! If you don't know how to do a french braid, look up directions on the internet or ask someone to help you.

Can horse hair be used for human hair braiding ?

I think so, but I prefer human hair or Kenakalon fibers if I ever resort to a weave. Kenakalon is better than synthetic because you can use curling and flat irons on it.Can horse hair be used for human hair braiding ?
yes it can. They are called extensions. Extensions come in horse hair and human hair. your hair has to be about 2-3 inches long to have extensions put in. but be careful, you may be allergic to the hair (yes, some people are). If you notice a rash on yous skin or scalp, call your doctor immediately. Not trying to scare you. That doesn't usually happen, I just know of one severe case. Can horse hair be used for human hair braiding ?
i have never heard of it but its probuably.lol
Yes it used fot many things
yes people use horse hair for extentions all the time its a black thing ha ha lol :^)
no human hair comes from a human they do not use horses hair for anything if it is synthetic hair then it is made of plastic and for the record there is a such thing as a stupid question yours being one of them it is ignorant to
    yes, it is the best

Should you wash your hair braids before you put it in to keep rid of the alkaline base b/c I heard it cause a?

areaction to some ppl. P.S. I heard vinger and a some water will work but I dont know which one 2 used the white vinger or apple cider vinger? plus I had a bad reaction the last time I got my braids taking out theyre were like tiny bumps in some part of my scalp but now they're bigger ,If ne 1 knows y this happen? (or is it a reaction to the hair I used kanelo hair the sytheic one) I 'll be glad for info.Should you wash your hair braids before you put it in to keep rid of the alkaline base b/c I heard it cause a?
Sounds like you could have had a reaction to the synthetic hair. If the braids are out and you are still getting these bumps then you may want to seek help from a Dr. It could be something that may require attention. I think every braider has their own perference. Some will wash the hair before using it, however it depends on the type of hair being used. Vinger and water works for some hair and damages other. I always side on the test run. If you really want to try to wash with vinegar and water. Test a small area, braid it, leave it in for a few days and see if you have any problems with the hair or any scents that may linger. Do not do apple cider vinegar, regular vinegar is preferred by a majority of people.

It all depends on where you are located, what type of braids you have and the type of hair you have. However, if you are referring to cornrows for a salon that is a fairly decent price. Make sure they are clean and do a good job (meaning not too tight or messy)
    HUH???
Sounds good to me. For a more intricate braid style with a ';design'; you'd pay around $40 or so. It may also depend on the lengtht/ thickness of the hair. Some charge more $ for more hair. Also, if you go in with braids they may charge an extra fee for having to undo the old braids.

How much would it cost to get my hair braided

tomorrow i might get my hair braided into those like micro braids. my hair is to my shoulders and its layerd. about how much would it cost to get the braids done? and also how long would it take? How much would it cost to get my hair braided
If you are going to the Africans or a shop it would prob. be between 120-200 they may charge more if ur hair is really long...I would suggest u have at least 2 working on ur head so they get done faster....also if ur hair is really thick it may take 12 hrs and finally I usually keep my in for a month and half to about two months... I usually get them touched up as well... hope this helped!!

How should I get my hair braided?

Im going to get my hair braided with extensions and I can't decide what kind of braids to get. Im a 13 year old girl, african american, my real hair is straight and relaxed, my hair goes to mid-neck, my hair is full so it wiill probably use a lot of hair extensions, my hair is very dark brown so nearly black but you can see some brown in sunlight. What style of braids should I get? What colour? How long? Pictures would be great. How should I get my hair braided?
I don't think micro-braids would be a good option for you, especially if you say that your hair is thick, it would be a long and tedious experience. I would suggest individual braids to the back, probably mid-back length. It would make it easier for you to wash %26amp; condition your hair and apply moisturizer to your hair and scalp. How should I get my hair braided?
well gurl, i think dat u shuld get da braid down to yer shoulders, n den it'll look real gud! gud luck!

How come braiding your in a pony tail make your hair grow faster and does it really work?

It may or may not. (((note, I'm a girl))) See, I have had braids for ten years give or take a year of my life and my hair is pretty long. Three feet, or something, but I don't think it's the braiding. I think it's because of the way you take care of your hair, the shampoo you use and how you cut it. Ah, and make sure that you get rid of split ends. They're evil! ^.^How come braiding your in a pony tail make your hair grow faster and does it really work?
Of course not. The braid may protect existing hair from breakage, though. On the other hand, braiding too tightly can cause scalp damage and can cause thinning hair. How come braiding your in a pony tail make your hair grow faster and does it really work?
this is not true. Amazing what people will say though.
hmmm... ive heard that works, let me know
any style that keeps you from having to manipulate daily will aide in ur hair growth...but leavign it like that for long periods of time will cause breakage when you finally take it down because it will tangle although you are not manipulating...

  • Is braiding your hair with weave bad for your hair?

i was told that if you braid your hair with weave it can pull your hair out. i want to get my hair braided so i dont have to put heat in it so my hair will grow- is this wrong

ohhh and when i get it braided i'll probably leave it in for about 1-2 weeks and oil it every 3 days is this good for my hair?Is braiding your hair with weave bad for your hair?
i braid and twist hair. i also keep mine braided. my hair is down my back. it keeps my hair growing so i won't throw it in a pony tail and it brakes off. i clip my ends first then get it braided. i dont put tracks in my hair because i dont like the bonding glue, it take your hair outIs braiding your hair with weave bad for your hair?
braiding ur hair with synthetic hair will be bad if u leave it in for too long, ur hair will definitely start to break off, braiding ur hair with human hair however, will be a better option for u. i would totally recommend that u get it done that way. as long as u maintain ur braids and wash them and oil or condition them u'll be good.
My daughter is mixed and she was told that weave isn't the best alternative. She went for mirco-braids. I learned how to do it in 2 days and Im pretty good. My daughter would go proud in school that mom did her hair. Heh!

Hey... anyway, I would research little bit more on web and see how safe weaves are. I would hate to hear if it came out bad for you.

    Take care, peace!
Yeah it's good especially if your oiling it, just leave it in a little longer maybe 3 weeks instead of 1-2.... but it can pull your hair out if it's braided to tight or it can pull your hairline way back leaving a bald spot in the front. But your doing fine apprantley just don't keep putting it in, make sure you wash your hair and don't put any weave in it for 2 weeks.

Right Now My Hair is Naturally Crimped By braiding it and then taking them out, I want to do a cool up-do?

i really suck at up-dos but I want to try one while my hair is like this any suggestions?Right Now My Hair is Naturally Crimped By braiding it and then taking them out, I want to do a cool up-do?
O.K. first you put it in a ponytail then you twist it and make it just twist it and then put going straight up and down then put some bobby pens in it and don't twist all of the hair or wont work!

Does braiding your hair make it grow faster?

no braiding your hair does not make it grow faster, but here are some things that will help your hair grow faster. Go to Walmart (in the pet area) or Walgreen's (in the shampoo area) and get Mane N tale shampoo and conditioner, it's in a yellow and white bottle and it has horses on it. This product can be used on animals and people, it's all natural and yes it really works. It only coasts under $7.00 per bottle, and it's worth it because they LAST a long time, and they're big bottles of it too. Also another thing you should do is massage your scalp once or twice a day, it helps with circulation and it will increase the grow of your hair, but not by much but some is better then none. Take your daily vitamins and that should help just don't over do it. Try not to fry your hair, so no over doing it with a flat iron or blow dryer.Does braiding your hair make it grow faster?
Mane N Tail shampoo and conditioner sucks... trust me I used it for like 6 months and it made my hair aweful. Braiding your hair does work, I have done it several times. It works best if it a french braid and if you do it before bed and then shower the kinks and curls out in the morning!

Having split/dead ends trimmed off once a month also helps a lot. When your hair starts to split or the ends dry out and die this stunts your hair growth a lot. Just make sure whoever does the trimming knows you don't want any more than half an inch cut off.. period.

Brushing your hair a lot helps too and make sure you choose a brush that does the job without pulling out a lot of hair. Always start at the ends of your hair with a brush and work your way up. For example brush a couple inches at the end of your hair until there are no tangles then go up a couple inchest and brush down until no more tangles, etc.

After you shower and dry your hair, naturally works best, tip your head down or bend over and brush your hair that way then go on to brush your hair the normal way.

Putting your hair up in ponytails during the day also works but don't make it extremely tight because it will give you a bad headache for sure, esspecially if your hair is thicker.

Using all of these tips, your hair will grow a lot faster!

Avoid bleaches and dyes that contain bleach, they will kill your hair really fast.

Natural shampoos and conditioners are the best for healthy growing hair and taking prenatal vitamins(even if your not pregnant) give you all the right vitamins for beautiful healthy hair.

I know its a long read.. but all of these do work, I PROMISE!Does braiding your hair make it grow faster?
i dont really know if braiding it makes it longer, but what i do is brush it about 200 times each night that seems to make it grow longer and faster for me. i dont really know if it would work for other pp, but it works for me sooo ya.....
No. No shampoo, pill, style or anything else makes hair grow faster. Hair growth is genetic.
It can unless you braid it too tight

When did you start braiding/tying ribbons round your baby girl's hair?

especially babies with afro hair? When did you start braiding/tying ribbons round your baby girl's hair?
I had to tie up my daughters hair in a little ponytail on the top of her head from 5 months. She just had so much of it, lol.

If you can, and need to, it's not a bad idea to get them used to it early, if you wait too long you're going to have a big struggle on your hands! When did you start braiding/tying ribbons round your baby girl's hair?
If you want to try braiding your babies hair in cornrows or small plaits then i would recommend you wait until she is a year old and remember not to pull her hair too tightly.

You can tie her hair into bunches anytime her hair is long enough to be gathered up, but yet again be careful not to pull her hair too tightly.

You can also buy special headbands to go around your babies head which look adorable if she doesn't yet have enough hair to be tied up.

p.s - don't forget to use appropriate Afro/Caribbean hair products in her hair (eg beautiful beginnings).
I did it whenever their hair got long and thick enough. For example, my 5 year old has very thin hair, so what I do with hers is limited. Where on the other hand, my 3 year old daughter has long, thick hair, so I can do more with hers. It just depends on texture and length.
if its long enough to do so then go ahead but not too tightly as her little head will hurt, really adorable though....x
i started doing my daughters hair as soon as it was long enough it doesnt hurt them or anything..as long as your careful!
Once their hair is long enough.
Never. I tried and their hair was just too fine to hold ribbons or bows.

Re. the one who said you should keep it short... BULL. That does NOT make her hair stronger.
you should keeop your baby's hair short untill pre school... it makes it thicker and stronger throughout her life.
about 9 months i started to

    xx
i was a baldy so my mom used corn syrup to stick a bow to my head (people liked to mistake me for a boy.) it stayed put and wasn't a choking hazard. don't use barrettes; those are choking hazard and if she gets ahold of that it's going straight in her mouth. just make sure whatever you do is secure and make sure that if you loose a ribbon or band that you find it and don't put her to bed with them in. i bet she looks good sporting a fro. ;o)
If only lol my daughter has bushy, curly hair that gets in her eyes but she won't let me touch it.When i put hair bobbles in she pulls them straight out and when i try to put them back in she throws a super tantrum.

If you can manage it, do it whenever your babies hairs long enough.
as long as the child hair is long enough to grip ribbons and bows it doesnt matter just dont put them 2 tight i started doin my baby hair at 3 and a half months i just couldnt wait
As soon as her hair was long enough to be able to. I couldn't wait to out it up %26amp; make it pretty! =)
my girlfriends baby is 10 months old tomarrow and she is putting her hair up in pony tails
i made a kinda paint brush in my lil lady's hair at 6 months

I want to make it but how? I dont want any wigs or anything fake like that though. And how do I keep it in place so that it dont get sticking out?How do I get micro hair braids?
Hi, you will need to find a hairdresser that specialises in that.

Most Black Hair dressing Establishments do it. Though you can get it in other hair dressing establishments these days it is a question of asking or shopping around. Please try using the Yellow Pages and phone around. If you happen to live in London should be easy because its done by a lot of Hair Dressers there. I hope this has helped. I would have been more specific if I new your location.

How to take the swelling from your head if just gotten hair braided?

Just got hair braided a.s.a.p. after school. Its really tight. When I got home I took a tylenol and took a nap because of the pain. Now that I have woken up my head feels tender and a little swelling has occurred. How to take the swelling from your head if just gotten hair braided?
Oh wow... Don't get your hair braided so tight again. It's causing too much stress on your scalp and i'm pretty sure your hair will be a bit damaged when you take it out.

The swelling will go away once the braids loosen up, so all you can really do is take a pain reliever which you've already done. But next time... Tell them to be a bit more gentle. How to take the swelling from your head if just gotten hair braided?
ice 15 minutes, break 30 minutes.

  • What does this mean?look for more info(hair braiding)?

It doesn't need to be long to get cornrows, just find someone who can grab your hair. But straight hair is trickier than curly or kinky hair, so it's harder for the braids to stay in place. They would probably need to set your hair if it isn't as long for the braids to stay, so you should go to a barber shop or salon to get them done - if you want yours to look halfway decent. And stick to straightbacks, please. Designs would look ridiculous.

Until then, just get a cool hairstyle that won't be too much or you from your stylist.

What are the pros and cons of getting your hair braided?

I wanna get my hair braided and keep it braided for like a year or 2 to let it grow out, what are the pros and cons of getting your hair braided? What are the pros and cons of getting your hair braided?
umm...i really wouldnt know that....maybe go to a beatuy place and ask them...go luck thouWhat are the pros and cons of getting your hair braided?
If braided to tight you will have hair loss especially around the hairline and temple area.

Braids should only stay in for 2-3 months at a time and re did.

Braids can cause the hair to grow because of less combing.
Just get it deep conditioned and trimmed every 2 weeks so it stays healthy and it should grow really fast.
    pros- your hair grows faster

cons-when you wash your hair it will fall out like mad,so don't be surprised.
cons- if not done correctly, your hair will break. your hair will be dirty. you can lose a lot of hair.

pros- your hair will grow faster.you won't have to worry about it in the morning. :]
    pros

    1) you don't have to do ur hair everyday

    2) it grows fast, since ur not styling it constantly

    3) low maintenance

    cons

    1) if they are put in too tight, it will cause the hair to break

    WATCH THE HAIRLINE ESPECIALLY

    2) takes a long time to put them in
cons - if braided properly and only kept in for at the most 3-4 months at a time, given a week break before rebraided, there are no cons

pros - less manipulation is done to the hair which means less breakage, you don't have to worry about hairstyles

How long does a person have to leave their hair braided before it starts to dread?

If you have any other advice it would be most appreciated. How long does a person have to leave their hair braided before it starts to dread?
it depends on your hair type and texture. And of cousre how strong it can uphold the braids. But the maximum time for individuals is 3 months, Cornrows with hair added up to 6 weeks and weaves up to 2 months. now when you hear tat a person has had it in longer. it isbecause they had a ';touch up';. Rebraiding or redoing what is lose or old looking. This is what maintains the styles and keeps you hair up without damaging it. If it didn not get a touch up. thats wher you would get dreads. It the mean while of touch up. Keep your styles up with the necessary haicar treatment for that particular style. (i.e. oil sheen, braids spray etc.)How long does a person have to leave their hair braided before it starts to dread?
    maybve two hours

I don't know anyone who could do it. And I don't see many girls to ask them where that get their's done. Help please.I have been wanting to get my hair braided. How should I go about finding a good hair braider?

Good luck!I have been wanting to get my hair braided. How should I go about finding a good hair braider?
    Inquire at the hair salon.

Does braiding make your hair grow longer, true or false and why?

True. Its not the braids that are making your hair grow longer its the lack of attention you have to give your hair that makes the difference. You brush and comb it less. And you put less product in it which helps it grow faster.Does braiding make your hair grow longer, true or false and why?
False, because hair growth is determined genetically and hormonally. It occurs beneath the surface so no amount of trimming, braiding, shampooing, .... will do anything about it. It does sometime grow faster during adolescence and pregnancy because the hormones are stronger then. Hair will seem to grow faster on straight hair than curly because it goes straight down and not horizontally. It will also appear to grow faster on short people than tall because it takes less time to grow to the chin, neck, back, in comparison.

Really tight braids left in for long periods of time may even cause traction alopecia, which is hair loss in a specific area because the hair follicle (part under the skin where it grows) is being pulled so hair it is damaged.

However, big braids will protect your hair from damage so you will have to trim split ends less, resulting in seemingly faster growing hair.

Can corn rows(?) or African type braiding be done on a white person? How long does your hair have to be to do?

Can hair extensions be used if your own hair is not long enough? How do you find a shop that does braids exclusively or at least to include braiding? Can corn rows(?) or African type braiding be done on a white person? How long does your hair have to be to do?
yes it can be done but white people's scalp is much more sensitive than blacks. So ur head is gonna be really sore. just walk into a hair braiding salon and tell them what u want and they'll take care of you.Can corn rows(?) or African type braiding be done on a white person? How long does your hair have to be to do?
Cornrows can be done on white people hair, it is more difficult, especially if your hair is really straight or thick. It depends on who is braiding your hair for how long it needs to be. Someone who is more proficient in braiding will do better than someone that merely knows how to do it. Look in the yellow pages. Some beauty shops put ads in there listing the services offered. You can have extensions braided in, but your hair has to be a little longer to have something to hold it on your head. It hurts to have cornrows, imagine all your hair being pulled tight for days. Plus it gets itchy, is hard to clean your scalp.
I'm pretty sure they can. Ask around, people will probably know where there is somebody who can do your braids for you. Your hair doesn't have to be that long. I have seen people who their hair was about chin length have it.
My wife's done it a few times. Typically shoulder length.
Google ';Bo Derek in 10'; to see what corn rows look like on a white woman

I'm thinking that you probably know someone who can braid your hair for less than both of those businesses. Everybody knows somebody that can hook them up.
u can go to a beauty school just mak sure u ask to see there work, but if your not worreid about how much it will cost i say go to a braid shop.

How do I take care of the hair braided underneath the weave?

I'm getting weave done for the second time, and the first time I got one, I was able to keep the weave nice, but when I took it out and took my braids out my hair was very matted. Please help!!!!

Please only answer if you have actual advice, don't answer just to get more points. How do I take care of the hair braided underneath the weave?
The hair that is braided is going to get matted regardless if you leave them in too long. And because you're not manipulating or detangling your hair, you should expect some matting.

You can take steps to keep the hair strong and conditioned under the weave.

When you wash the hair try not to rub too hard and make sure you dry the braids completely because they will swell and get bacteria prone.

Use a light oil on your scalp and try to get one with an applicator tip. I like Doo Gro growth oils, Organic Root Stimulator Dry Scalp Relief or anti-itch scalp oil. If your hair is chemical free you can use organic root stimulator shea butter. It will keep your hair and scalp soft while braided. You have to gently massage the oil into your scalp so you don't loosen the braids.

Try not to rub your scalp with scalp with hair grease or anything like that because it will cause your braids to loosen which will lead to more matting.

Use a wig brush, one with coated bristles. Brush the weave away from your scalp so you're not catching the braids. This will keep the brush from pulling your hair out of the braids and it will keep your braids neater. How do I take care of the hair braided underneath the weave?
I've had a weave done and also the extensions where they fuse them to little individual bunches of your hair with keratin. Either way you end up with knots because your hair is growing over time underneath the braid and it's hard to comb the part between your scalp and the weave part. And with the individual bunches fused with keratin it was the same problem. I used a conditioner for my skalp to make the knots more difficult to form.
As long as your hair is sewn in tight and correctly, then you should be able to wash and condition as needed. And be sure that the shampoo %26amp; conditioner gets to the braids and roots so that you can take care of your natural hair as well as the false hair. Hope this helps!

You should condition your hair really well when you wash it. Even the braids underneath. Then apply a leave in conditioner on your braids and some oil sheen from time to time.

What type of extension hair braid is this called?

It is similar to indivual braids, but it begins with a ';C';, and i don't know how to pronouce it that well. What type of extension hair braid is this called?
Hmm...extension? ConrowsWhat type of extension hair braid is this called?
    cornrows?
The only thing i can think of that involves a c is cornrows (Corn-Rows)

This isn't an extension though, it can be done with your real hair.

All it is, is a french braid using a fraction of the hair. Most cornrows are rolled from the front of the scalp (from you forehead) to the back (neck.)
There is an EXTENSION called ';Interlock'; that is like individual braids (Don't know of one that starts with a C that is an extension). The hair is only braided at the root and the rest is left unbraided for a natural effect that is virtually undetectable.
u might be talking about cornrows

I have had human hair braids for 2 months now. I am ready to cut my hair. How can I achieve Eva Pigford hair?

I haven't had a relaxer in about 3 months now. I want to texturize my hair myself and go to the salon to get it cut. Is this a good idea or should I just get a stylist to do it all? gel the 3 strands your using while they are wet. then and a VERY small amout of gel when finishedDoes anyone have any tips on pigtail braiding hair??
Well, first off leave the side-bangs out.

    1. Wet your hair, even do this after a shower.

    2. Put a small dab of anti-frizz cream and comb it through-out your hair.

    3. Now, while your hair is still wet, braid it. Seperate it into the two different sections you are going to braid. Then braid.

    4. After you braid it run some gel over it %26amp; let dry naturally.
Do not dry your hair after getting out of the shower.

Place any type of hair gel or hair anti-frizz in your hair.

    Then braid your pig tails.

    Tie the pig tails off.

I had to do that for years.

(After it dries, you can also had extra hold with hair spray)optional

You will need to go to a beauty supply that is in a divers area of town. Not a small beauty supply. Try and find a beauty ware house or a school of cosmetology.

Is it legal to have a volunteer hair braiding and weaving service with a flexible donation list w/o a license?

Depends on where you live. As long as you're doing inside your home or under the table at a salon, you won't get in trouble. I would make sure your clients are cool though, otherwise, If something goes wrong, you're gonna get slapped with a lawsuit.

Braiding hair at night for waves in the morning...?

I often braid my hair in pigtails after I shower before I go to bed so that my hair will be wavy in the morning. Sometimes it comes out all right but sometimes it comes out funny and I'm stuck with it all day. Any tips?Braiding hair at night for waves in the morning...?
well make sure you braid them tight and spray them down with hair spray.

the next morning wet it down a little and add like some mossue, serum, or hair spray

that works for me!Braiding hair at night for waves in the morning...?
DOn't braid it too tight, and make sure theres some hair left under the hair tie so that it doesn't stick at a weird angle. i use this, and it looks great.
Buy a straightener for when it doesn't come out right... and a 1-2 inch curling iron to fix it afterwords =]
use flexiable hair spay and four braids instead of 2

Will braiding my hair cause damage?

I have short-ish hair that's barely past my shoulders and I love to braid it and leave it overnight so it will get all wavy and slightly crimped in the morning.I do this while it's dry by the way.But I'm trying to grow out my hair too so I was just wondering if it will make my hair will break and split. Thanks! Will braiding my hair cause damage?
No, actually braiding your hair at night before you go to sleep is good for your hair; it helps it to not get tangled and pop off, esp. if you sleep on a cotton pillow.

Satin pillows are best. Will braiding my hair cause damage?
    no it will not.

    Hi heeyllothere,

    African hair braider here! Say: ';oh these? They are the latest craze- I plan on indulging myself with other braid styles, different hair textures, curly, wavy, long, short....I think it's exciting! I know it's very expensive to get these done, but I know I deserve it.';

Or something to that effect. But never say flat out no, it's not my hair. Never allow anybody to make you feel bad for something that is a utility to you, that is beautiful, and above all, makes YOU feel good about yourself. Remember to always tune into the woman that is you- some days you may have to delve deeper, but this is the right time to let your 'woman' out, and you don't even have to get upset with them! Have fun with it- It works.

    Enjoy!
