African american culure question? hair braiding?

Hair braiding in Africa has a multi-leveled function within each culture apart from the beauty and sophistication of the designs. What are some of the ways in which social and cultural meaning are expressed through braiding designs? Does the use of hair braiding designs by people of African heritage in the Americas also indicate a measure of cultural awareness and possible connection between the two cultural worlds?African american culure question? hair braiding?
Braiding is a social/cultural tradition Grandmother did mom's hair who did her sister's hair who did we children. All the while swapping the news and gossip of the day. Many of our social life could me traced to the hairdressers and to the church and to Grandmother's kitchen.African american culure question? hair braiding?
I definately feel it is a skill passed down. It comes almost natural for most. I notice that African women seem to braid a lot faster though.
For me wearing locs has both cultural, spiritual and personal connections.

  • Is hair braiding dangerous?

i braid my hair every day, after i get home from school to keep it from getting frizzy, and irritating my face and ears, is braiding it every day dangerous? Is hair braiding dangerous?
    NoIs hair braiding dangerous?
    never.lol
If you braid it tightly (especially in a ton of small braids as in cornrows), it's a strain on your hair and your hair will start either getting thinner in places and/or breaking. If you MUST braid it tightly, then don't do it every day. Loosely braided shouldn't really be a problem at all. Now, ponytails, on the other hand....

You should try leaving the braids in for a while. About every few weeks. Every time you take them out, or put them back in, it breaks the strands, leaving you with split ends. So watch it. Other than that, it's perfectly fine. Remember to condition your scalp.
    No, not at all!

If you want to make sure your hair doesn't get frizzy, apply some leave-in conditioner on your hair before you braid it.
    of course not!

braiding hair helps your hair so much

    it prevents knots forming

    and helps hair grow better.
No, of course not! I love to braid my hair after showering because then it gets all wavy!

If you braid it too tightly (so your hair is pulling at the scalp) it puts stress on the hair follicle. If you do that to your hair every day all day for years, you can start to experience thinning hair or hair loss. Just braiding your hair after school for a few hours is fine tho, youre not going to lose your hair from that.
Yes and no. Braiding your hair every day to keep it from frizzing and irritating your face and ears could be 'breaking it off' and it will get 'thinner' over time. Try getting some nice 'headbands' and some bobby pins and barettes, and that way you can 'do your hair differently' every day, and can even wear it 'back' at school and look good. And NEVER 'braid your hair' to sleep ... that will cause even worse breakage. Get a 'snood' (a crocheted net) to hold it when you sleep, so your hair can 'breathe better' and you won't have to spend too much time combing/brushing out your snarls.
no its not. wash and condition your health helps keep it healthy and strong
nope, it's not.....it may make your scalp sore, but that's it.
    nope
It's not dangerous, but if your face is getting iritatted, then mabye you should stop for one day, then if your face still keeps getting irriated, then it's not because of the braids, it's because of something else. But if the irritation stops, then you should stop braiding your hair. Some people are just very snesitive to things like that.
Only if you get your fingers all twisted in them when doing it.

Otherwise, no. You could consider braiding your hair as gently exercising it and your scalp.
no as long as you don't braid them too tight its actually very healthy
no just make sure ur scalp is moist and not dry, or else ur hair could start breaking off

Stuff to make braiding hair easier?

I have shoulder lenth hair. and I'm going to try different braids for the summer. but my hair is kinda crawly. any ideas an how to make it stifferStuff to make braiding hair easier?
Try Bed Head products.Stuff to make braiding hair easier?
The best time to do it is when its wet. . So, do it when you get out of the shower, or get a spray bottle and wet your hair first. .
If my crawly you mean curly, Then just braid it when its wet. Put a little moose on it too if you want. This will help control frizz.

Does braiding your hair and washing it helps it grow?

Depends on which type of braiding method you use. Anytime you do a style for a long time(such as cornrows or box braids), you up the chances of making your hair healthier by not processing it with heat and harsh chemicals.

If you mean braiding it for a longer time by getting micro braids or extensions yes you will see a major change as it grows. Typically these type of braids can be kept it in for 2 and half to 3 months at the most and since the hair is not exposure to straightening, heat damage or anything else the hair can become fuller and thicker making to grow easier! And of course washing your hair with a good shampoo and using a deep conditioner always will help hair maintain its' health!

No, it does not. A person's hair grows more (naturally) in the spring and summertime than in fall and winter time.Does braiding your hair and washing it helps it grow?
for me i think that braiding your hair it does make i grow, but it also breaks the hair too. you could get braids done atleast once a month and not too tight. try using the products that contain olive oil.
    hmm. i doubt it.

If i keep my hair braided until december how long will it be ?

Im thinkin about doing this to retain length. If i keep my hair braided until december how long will it be ?
everyone hair grows differently so I can't say for sure but make sure you keep it clean and condition it regularlyIf i keep my hair braided until december how long will it be ?
While braiding can prevent some breakage (and stretch strands slightly), it doesn't promote growth. Your hair will grow at the same rate whether braided or not. For most people, hair grows approximately 1/2 inch per month -- for those with tight curls or a textured growth pattern, it will appear to grow less than that.
everyone's hair growth speed is different, so only time will tell.
How much does your hair grow? Braids don't make hair grow faster.
